Dutch Baroque Era Painter, ca.1628-1682 Ruysdael's favorite subjects are simple woodland scenes, similar to those of Everdingen and Hobbema. He is especially noted as a painter of trees, and his rendering of foliage, particularly of oak leaf age, is characterized by the greatest spirit and precision. His views of distant cities, such as that of Haarlem in the possession of the marquess of Bute, and that of Katwijk in the Glasgow Corporation Galleries, clearly indicate the influence of Rembrandt. He frequently painted coast-scenes and sea-pieces, but it is in his rendering of lonely forest glades that we find him at his best. The subjects of certain of his mountain scenes seem to be taken from Norway, and have led to the supposition that he had traveled in that country. We have, however, no record of such a journey, and the works in question are probably merely adaptations from the landscapes of Van Everdingen, whose manner he copied at one period. Only a single architectural subject from his brush is known--an admirable interior of the New Church, Amsterdam. The prevailing hue of his landscapes is a full rich green, which, however, has darkened with time, while a clear grey tone is characteristic of his seapieces. The art of Ruysdael, while it shows little of the scientific knowledge of later landscapists, is sensitive and poetic in sentiment, and direct and skillful in technique. Figures are sparingly introduced into his compositions, and such as occur are believed to be from the pencils of Adriaen van de Velde, Philip Wouwerman, and Jan Lingelbach. Unlike the other great Dutch landscape painters, Ruysdael did not aim at a pictorial record of particular scenes, but he carefully thought out and arranged his compositions, introducing into them an infinite variety of subtle contrasts in the formation of the clouds, the plants and tree forms, and the play of light. He particularly excelled in the painting of cloudscapes which are spanned dome-like over the landscape, and determine the light and shade of the objects. French Fauvist Painter and Sculptor, 1869-1954 Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic, the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat, purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein. Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Norwegian Impressionist Painter, 1847-1906 .Norwegian painter and engraver. Originally wanting to become a marine painter he studied at the art academy in Copenhagen (1870-73) as well as with the Danish marine specialist C. F. S?rensen (1818-79). He spent two winters at Karlsruhe (1873-4, 1874-5) as the pupil of Hans Gude and then went to Paris, where he spent much of the period 1875-9. His marines and coastal pictures, some of which were accepted at the Paris Salon, were only moderately successful, but he acquired a fair knowledge of contemporary French Realist art and felt that Norwegian artists should learn from it.

Maria Christina Röhl, född i Stockholm den 26 juli 1801, död i Klara församling, Stockholm den 5 juli 1875, var en svensk porträttmålare som avbildade ett flertal samtida kända personer. Medlem i konstakademien (1843) och hovleverantör. Hennes tavlor hänger bland annat på Nationalmuseum i Stockholm. En samling av 1800 porträtt finns på Kungliga Biblioteket. Maria Röhl växte upp i en rik familj, men då hon blev föräldralös 1822 drabbades hon av fattigdom. Hon tänkte först bli guvernant, men professorn och kopparstickaren Christian Forsell undervisade henne då i teckning; hon hade redan tidigare undervisats av målaren Alexander Hambr??, och fick nu lära sig att utföra snabba och realistiska porträtt i blyerts; hon arbetade i blyerts och krita i svartvitt. Hon bodde hos familjen Forsell, där hon först avbildade familjens vänner och sedan, då det hade blivit modernt att låta avbilda sig av "mamsell Röhl", försörjde hon sig på detta i trettio år. Hon utnämndes till kunglig hovmålare 1843, studerade 1843-1846 under Leon Cogniet vid Franska konstakademien i Paris och hade sedan en atelj?? i Brunkebergs hotell i Stockholm. Fotografikonsten blev en svår konkurrent under hennes sista år. Även systern Eva Röhl (1810-96) uppges ha haft viss konstärlig begåvning.
